What is an XOR checksum?

Bully's F2 Codetype Tutorial has helped me some, but I wish to understand what exactly an XOR is and not just how to use it. Can anyone explain in more detail?

XOR means "exclusive OR". It compares the binary of two values and if it differs, puts a 1 as result, otherwise 0.

Example:

10011
01010
-------
11001

You don´t quite need to know that in 99% of the cases, though.
