Everyone knows big forums or websites with thousands or millions of active users. It's chaotic since every minute or so somebody makes a post. Who can read everything and deal with it? Nobody! It's hard to stand out of the masses too. Posts just sink in endlessly long topics by people nobody knows since there are so many different members. Who manages information sources? Yeah, nobody or every member on his own and we know how effective that is and how competent everybody is. 
These are the kind of reasons why I wanted to rather make an own site than being too restricted. Making or changing sections? Forget it on a big site, you will never get admin or even moderator. Working your ass off for years to finally get a better rank? Nah
People telling you what to do or not to do? Nope, I'm going to do what I want. 
Gotta love freedom in publishing content online. I really don't like those big sites too much therefore
